The Hopeless Romantic

For your edification

I often find that my political views baffle others and defy their natural need to categorize things. So consider this my manifesto; a statement of beliefs. I am a Tribal Radical, not the first certainly, but perhaps the first to give these ideas a banner under which to fall.
What is a Tribal Radical? To put it succinctly, it means someone who believes that a nomadic lifestyle is the most ideal lifestyle for humans. I call it radical, because it is a radically different approach to civilization than the one we seem inevitably headed towards. In this system, tribes would be made of about sixty to one hundred individuals, led by a tribal council, chief, or other small governing body. This belief is based on some precepts:
1) Humans should be in harmony with nature
2) A Utilitarian perspective should be applied whenever possible.
3) The tribal societal structure satisifies the needs of one and two, because a tribe is ideally small and effecient; having little impact on the rest of humanity. What's more, the dangers of political corruption and bureaucracy are limited to a very small radius; a tribe may go bad, but this will have little effect on outside humans or the environment as a whole.
4) I feel humans have stopped evolving (evolving has many connotations here, including spiritually, intellectually, and physically). This lifestyle provides challenges to help them grow.
5) Biologists have found that a small population/group thrives when compared to larger ones.

Influences on this political philosophy include the book Fightclub, Ishmael, and the messages of Frank Herbert.
This is a rather futile and romantic notion. But that's how I am.

Feel the love

The president of the LDS church was on Larry King Live last night, and he talked of meeting with the Dali Lama recently. I thought that was pretty cool. I love it when religions get along.

sometimes my mind is blown

I just found out that the author of house of leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski, is brother to weird musical siren Poe. I've read Denielewski's book, but had no idea why Poe sang about things from the book until now. This is a very cool revelation to me. Here's her song with the same title as his book: House of leaves. The lyrics are actually a passage from his book.
"My father was a filmmaker," he says, "and my mother was an actress. When you live in a vaudeville family, you know the attention is just a fantasy." Born a year apart and described by Mark as "Irish twins who parented each other," he and his sister, he says, have worked at keeping close during their thirties. They have also, Danielewski admits, "divided up the labor" of exploring the underworld of family dynamics. Poe’s Haunted is about their late father and includes his recorded voice. The Whalestoe Letters, on the other hand, seems to give voice to a powerfully influential mother. "Like mad women in attics, she was confined to the appendix in House of Leaves," Danielewski says, referring to Whalestoe’s female character.

Somebody shut that kid up

Okay, I seem to have a bit of de Vega's syndrome. For those of you not in the know, Lope Félix de Vega Carpia (1562-1635), known as Lope de Vega, published between 1,800 to 2,500 plays during his life, some 450 of which survive. Towards the end of his life, it was rumored that he wrote two plays a week.

Moments, and the latest evil of disney

Life right now is about scrambling for moments, trying to catch them like fireflys out of the air, grabbing them by the fistfull, and pulling them close to peer at them with the smile of a child.

Tonight was apparently another one of those nights for foriegn movies about food and romance. First there was the movie Chocolat (coinciding with a drop-noodle Japanese dish Ben cooked), then we watched my selection, The Sent of Green Papaya, (coinciding with red-pepper-hot cocoa we had to make as soon as Chocolat was finished). Just a few weekends ago, we watched Tampopo while eating ramen. Each movie/meal has also been very spicy. (and yes I know that Chocolat is technically not foreign).

This, picture, idly sketched during class, seems to look like me in some ways, but is quite different in others. In any case, it was not planned to look like anyone.

This news about disney scares me; the fact that disney owns the muppets depresses me. Abra, I think this is where you weigh in with a rant or something.
