Whoa! I'd totally forgotten about Paul Mauriat until I saw your post. A few years ago, when they were still together, I used to love a Japanese band called Lareine, and the lead singer cited Mauriat as one of his influences. I've never heard the song in your post before, but I can definitely hear how it influenced Japan's Romance aesthetic (Rose of Versailles and such...the same theme Lareine went for).
