2nd Tokyo vid

There comes a point in between studying Japanese and teaching English, that English grammar starts to look really complicated and strange. It really got to me when the kids were studying 関係代名詞 (relative pronouns) this year. Why do we do that? Not that hard, but this grammar seems almost alien to me now.
"This is the language which seems overly complicated. Anyone? Anyone?"

  1. When I started out as an ALT, I actually reviewed English grammar. I even got to the point where I could diagram a sentence and tell you what the descriptive clause was. It's something I like to tell people to bore them...

  2. I don't know how anyone is supposed to teach the seemingly random additions and prepositions we use, or probably half of english grammar.

But then again Japanese grammar seems alien to me...
