I asked a Japanese teacher I work with that once and he said it was because once upon a time it was cool and no one ever told the Japanese people it stopped being popular.
Hee, I believe that. Now it's transformed into a wide variety of 'Power Ranger' poses and disgustingly cutsey poses among the younger kids.
